Sheds and Storage Buildings: Site Preparation

All About Site Preparation

Site preparation is one of the most important aspects of any construction project, including your new storage building.

A level site not only enhances the appearance of your building, but is critically important to durability and functionality. That said, prior to delivery of your storage building, you will need to prepare the site and ensure that it is properly leveled.

The first step in site preparation is to decide where you are placing the building. Be sure to check with your town first for specific ordinances or site specifications. The site must be cleared of all obstructions, including rocks, fences, debris, trees, shrubs, low-hanging branches, etc., that may interfere with access. Specific access requirements can be found on our on our website under Site Work & Delivery Options.

  • Step 1: Stake out corners Step 1: Stake out corners
  • Step 2: Dig 4-6 inches Step 2: Dig 4-6 inches

Next, stake out the corners of your building, allowing for one foot of extra space on each side. To ensure the area is square, measure diagonally from corner to corner; these distances should be equal. Hang a string from the highest corner string to the lowest, and then hang a line level on the string to find the level spot. Move the string up and down until it is level, and wrap it firmly around the stake at the proper height.

  • Step 3: Fill with 3/4" stone Step 3: Fill with 3/4" stone
  • Step 4: Shed delivered ready to use! Step 4: Shed delivered ready to use!

Once you have determined where the line is level, a stone pad can prepared to level the site. The stone pad should consist of ¾" stone, 4 to 6 inches deep. This, too, should be one foot larger than the footprint of the storage building on each side. In addition to helping to level the site, the stone pad offers 100% floor support, maximizes the durability and lifespan of your building, and ensures proper drainage.

The Barn Yard recommends that all customers prepare a stone pad prior to delivery. This service can be completed by the customer or provided by the professionals at The Barn Yard. Contact us for more information.
