What could be more frustrating than purchasing a new shed and finding out, too late, that it doesn't meet your needs? A little time and planning before you start shopping will help to ensure a purchase you'll be happy with for many years to come.

If your shed will be used for storage, begin by listing everything it will house – both seasonally and year round. This could include anything from garden tools and equipment to lawn furniture to boats and vehicles. You will then need to consider how much floor space each item requires and determine the cumulative total. A few common props and dimensions are included, but you can easily create your own.

When considering the placement of various objects, be sure to leave enough space for maneuvering. Things that aren't used on a regular basis may be able to be tucked in a corner, but you'll want easy access to those things you use often. Some items, such as garden tools, can be stored on hooks or shelves to maximize your shed's storage capacity. Remember to also consider the location and size of doors to get things in and out easily.

Another factor you need to determine is how much workspace, if any, you would like in your shed. Do you want a tool or potting bench to accomplish simple tasks, or perhaps a more extensive work bench for woodworking or other hobbies? Add this space to your cumulative total.

Finally, assuming you want your shed to add aesthetic value to your property, be sure to consider how proportionate it is to your home and yard and exactly where it will be located.
