Designed, engineered, & built by The Barn Yard’s sister company Great Country Timber Frames, this 3,800 sq. ft. timber frame home in Tolland, CT is designed with Rocky Mountain West inspiration. From the massive timbers in the great room to the cathedral ceilings and barn board accents, this barn home delivers on the welcoming, Rocky Mountain lodge feel, while still incorporating modern elements into the design.
Entering the home, the visitor is greeted by the timber frame portico with rusty metal roof, as if walking into a lodge in Jackson, Wyoming. Stepping inside, the great room, which was the focus of the design from day one, welcomes with massive timbers and hammer beam trusses stretching skyward 27' at their peak. A stone fireplace is situated between two timber bents and follows the contour of the posts and braces. Reclaimed barn wood is featured on the ceiling, strongly held in place by the timber frame structure. The strong and graceful Douglas Fir timbers, which provide the structure of the great room, balcony, foyer, kitchen, and dining room, are exposed and featured in all their glory. Being a timber frame home and not a log home, drywall is used behind the timbers and offers a nice contrast between rustic and modern.
One can almost imagine snow falling quietly outside as you sit by the fire and enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate after a good day of skiing.
Arched braces, a Great Country Timber Frames signature, were part of the design from day one. Even the bottom timbers in the grand hammer beam trusses in the great room are arched slightly, letting the eye slide up the trusses with no jagged disturbance. Powder-coated metal strapping is used in the truss design and adds to the Rocky Mountain western feel of the home.
The kitchen is more contemporary, striking a balance between rustic beams overhead and white cabinets & granite countertops below. Open to the great room, dining room, and foyer, the kitchen is designed, again, to be a welcoming, gathering place.
The home is a hybrid design, with some rooms conventionally framed. The timber frame portion includes the great room, deck, balcony, and kitchen, plus an attached 2-story post and beam barn garage with dormer.
Great Country Timber Frames handled the design, engineering, and raising of the massive timber structure in-house by their skilled team.
